Travel Tips ① Japan Rail Pass
You can currently buy a Japan Rail Pass in Japan after you have arrived. If you'll visit various cities, Japan Rail Pass would be an essential item. It’s better to buy one in advance as it will save money.
JAPAN RAIL PASS, a joint offering of the six companies comprising the Japan Railways Group (JR Group), is the economical and convenient means of traveling throughout Japan by rail.
There are two types of PASSes: PASS for Green Cars and PASS for Standard Cars. Each type can be purchased for 7 days, 14 days or 21 days.
There are certain conditions for use. For example, "NOZOMI" and "MIZUHO" trains on the Tokaido, Sanyo and Kyushu Shinkansen Lines cannot be used.
◆ NOTE
You are a foreign tourist visiting Japan from abroad for sight-seeing, under the entry status of "temporary visitor."
◆ Eligibility for use
Temporary Visitor entry status, according to Japanese Immigration Law, allows a stay in Japan of 15 days or 90 days for "sight-seeing, etc. "If you apply for a "stay for sight-seeing" when you enter Japan, entry personnel will stamp your passport as "Temporary Visitor," as shown below.
In order to receive or use JAPAN RAIL PASS, your passport must bear this stamp or sticker.
How to purchase
Purchase a JAPAN RAIL PASS on the dedicated website (JAPAN RAIL PASS Reservation) .Business hours of the dedicated website are from 4:00 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. (Japan local time UTC+9:00)
When you arrive in Japan, pick up the JAPAN RAIL PASS at the ticket office counter.
② If you purchase an Exchange Order at a JR-designated sales office or agent overseas.
● Buy at JR designated sales office or agents(Before you come to Japan )
Buy your Exchange Order for the JAPAN RAIL PASS at one of the following sales offices or agents before coming to Japan.JTB Corp, Nippon Travel Agency, KINTETSU INTERNATIONAL, Tobu Top Tours, Japan Airlines, ANA Sales Americas(Los Angeles)※1, JALPAK, and their associated agencies.
※1 In this case, you must book an ANA Group flight.
● Turn in your Exchange Order to receive a JAPAN RAIL PASS
Present your Exchange Order and obtain your JAPAN RAIL PASS after you arrive in Japan.You have to turn in your Exchange Order (with your passport) to receive your JAPAN RAIL PASS at a JAPAN RAIL PASS exchange office in a major JR station.
③ If you purchase a JAPAN RAIL PASS at a ticket office in Japan
The JAPAN RAIL PASS is also on sale at certain sales offices in Japan until March 31, 2021.In Japan, however, the JAPAN RAIL PASS is sold only to those who have non-Japanese passports.
(The PASS is unavailable to Japanese nationals living outside Japan.)
